Grab some popcorn, a blanket or a chair and get ready to see some of the most iconic aviation cinematography. This is the first time Stinson Municipal Airport has become the backdrop for Slab Cinema, a series of movies shown outdoors at the airport.
This family-friendly event is an opportunity for the community to come together to enjoy a free movie, eat some snacks and cherish time with family and friends. There will be plenty of food from Big Bib BBQ Restaurant and other concession items for sale.
Friday, March 3 – “Red Tails” (PG-13) at 7 p.m.
During World War II, the Civil Aeronautics Authority selects 13 black cadets to become part of an experimental program at the Tuskegee Institute of Alabama. The program aims at training “colored personnel” to become fighter pilots for the Army. However, discrimination, lack of institutional support and the racist belief that these man lacked the intelligence and aptitude for the job during their every step. Despite this, the Tuskegee Airmen, as they become known, more than prove their worth.
Friday, March 17 – “Top Gun” (PG) at 8 p.m.
The Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School is where the best of the best train to refine their elite flying skills. When hotshot fighter pilot Maverick (Tom Cruise) is sent to the school, his reckless attitude and cocky demeanor put him at odds with the other pilots, especially the cool and collected Iceman (Val Kilmer). But Maverick isn’t only competing to be the top fighter pilot, he’s also fighting for the attention of his beautiful flight instructor, Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis).
Friday, March 31 – “Memphis Belle” (PG-13) at 8 p.m.
At a U.S. Army Air Force Base in England, the crew members of B-17 bomber Memphis Belle prepare for their 25th and final sortie into enemy German territory. Bomber Capt. Dennis Dearborn (Matthew Modine) knows the mission is a dangerous one, but he’s under pressure from Army public relations man Lt. Col. Bruce Derringer (John Lithgow) to earn a decisive victory for allies. Now, the Memphis Belle prepares to take flight as apprehension and dissention grow among Dearborn’s crew.
Friday, April 7 – “Amelia” (PG) at 8 p.m.
For the time she first sits in the pilot’s seat, aviatrix Amelia Earhart (Hilary Swank) feels destined to achieve great things. Beginning in 1928, she sets a number of aviation milestones, including numerous speed and altitude records, and was the first women to fly solo across the Atlantic. In 1937, Amelia undertakes her greatest challenge of all: to become the first woman to circumnavigate the globe by airplane.
The movies will be held at the Stinson Terminal, located at 8535 Mission Road, and during inclement weather movie will be shown in a hanger.
